Magic Solves Everything

I now believe (truly) that magic might fix just about everything. We recently introduced a new Christmas tradition to our family. His name is “Chip”, proudly given to him by our two oldest (the babe would likely chew his poor little arm off!). He is an “Elf on the Shelf”.

I am sure you have heard of it (seems to be the latest craze). In case you have not you might find their site  enjoyable and downright fun. Authors Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell came up with this brilliant book and tradition that basically teaches our kids to believe in magic and wonderment and to be on their best behavior because someone is ALWAYS watching!

So far our little “Chip” has had to endure the wrath of our sconces (burnt a hole right in his tiny little butt), he has been “touched” which if you have read the book telling the story about Elf on the Shelf you know that it diminishes his magic if you touch him. We didn’t really have a choice though since his butt was reduced to one cheek someone HAD to touch him and move him to safer grounds.

I explained to the kids that it was okay to touch him just this one time and that I would mail him back to Santa (his magic was gone thanks to us so he couldn’t possibly fly) and write him a note explaining what had happened. That seemed to calm them and when he arrived the next morning it was as if he never lost that little cheek.

So I thought I would chronicle the next month’s worth of our little “Chip’s” adventures and where he lands each morning just waiting for the kids to find him. At first I think my hubby thought I had lost my marbles but even he has gotten into it and I hear my oldest reminding my middle child to “be nice because Chip is watching!”.

What is NOT to love about that!?

A Turkey Day Gift

One of my FAVORITE holidays is Thanksgiving. It has a LOT to do with all the yummy food but also with tradition and spending that time with family (no gift giving required).

 

Since I am in the holiday spirit I thought I would share with you one of my favorite recipes that is requested year after year and is just silly easy.

 

Slow-Cooker Mushroom-Herb Bread Stuffing

1 butter (1/2 cup)

2 medium onions, chopped

2 C celery, chopped

1 mushrooms, sliced (12 ounce)

2/3 C fresh parsley, chopped

2 tsp dried sage

1 tsp poultry seasoning

1 tsp dried thyme

1/2 tsp dried marjoram

1 1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

1 1/4 C chicken broth

2 large eggs

1 whole-wheat bread, torn in pieces, left out overnight to dry.

Have ready a 5-quart or larger crock pot.
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and celery; sauté 8 to 10 minutes until translucent.
Add mushrooms; cook 5 minutes. Stir in parsley, sage, poultry, seasoning, thyme, marjoram, salt and pepper. Transfer to crock pot.
Whisk broth and eggs in a bowl then combine mixture with the rest of the ingredients in the crock pot; mix until blended. Cook on high 45 minutes then reduce heat to low and cook 4 to 6 hours.

 

***I like to do all the prep in advance. A couple of days before serving I sauté the veggies and spices and then the night before I tear the bread and leave it out to dry. Pop it all in the crock on the day you are serving and you are as good as done!

You might be wondering what MAMTDT stands for. Let me explain and then share with you the first official letter written on behalf of MAMTDT.

 

MAMTDT stands for “Moms Against Moms That Don’t Think”. I have decided, after a first hand experience yesterday, that there may need to be a support group for these types of mothers that have simply turned their brain off and no longer know right from wrong, appropriate from not appropriate.

 

So here it is. The first official letter to said moms who have turned off their thinkers.

 

Dear Brainless Mother, 

 

I am writing you today to remind you that it is “okay” to think. More than okay really. It is actually a requirement that all mothers are supposed to pledge to when giving birth. Sadly I think your nurse forgot to have you sign your life away because here you are, with your 6-year-old at a sexy vamp movie. 

 

I can understand if you were a single mom. Maybe you needed a break and had no choice but to bring your son along. Sadly you are not. You have also forced your hubby to endure the pain of this chic flick too. I see you have a teenage daughter as well but maybe you could have considered leaving the boys at home? So far I have seen your son (felt and heard him too) violently shaking his seat, rocking it fiercely with all his might. I have heard his complaints and watched him shield his eyes during the scary parts. 

 

On several occasions during this 2 hour-long movie (not even the amount of time a kid can sit still at that age) I have witnessed other movie patrons casting you and your family rude looks and whispering to their friends. You would think that all of the above would be enough for your brain waves to connect and jump-start themselves but no. NO you still sit there ignoring your child while you devour popcorn and indulge without consequence. 

 

Here and now I commit to helping you think. Providing you will a moral compass. I will be the person you can call to say “Do you think it would be okay to bring my 6-year-old to a work happy hour at a posh bar downtown?”. No I will say. No. It is most certainly not okay for you to bring your child to a happy hour, an unhappy hour or any other kind of hour. You may bring your child to McDonald’s, have a picnic in the park, venture to IKEA. Under no circumstances will you bring your child to a happy hour or sexy vamp movie again. 

 

It is time to think! It is time to re-ignite your inner NO, your inner guidance, self-control and just plain ole common sense. Call me when you need to just double-check if your gut feels a little wobbly. I am happy to shout “NO NO NO” any time.

Friday Photo Favorite And OneMommy’s Thought Dump

As I look out the window I see a fresh blanket of snow. It is slightly depressing since I know we have many months to come of “fresh blankets of snow” but mostly it is just beautiful. It reminds me of being a kid and doing exactly what Ava and Ian are doing in these pictures.

Two words describe these images: PURE ENJOYMENT.

Too bad we can’t bottle that!

It was funny to be able to capture both of them “tasting” the fresh flakes as they fell. Everyday since has been sheer excitement and renewed enthusiasm for seeing the snow on the ground. I hope this feeling continues through the “deep freeze” as I like to refer to the many months of winter we experience here in Northern Minnesota.

Enjoying the smell of a burning fire (even if it is dulled thanks to my first cold of the season).
Feeling tired of feeling sick. Just can’t lie about that one!
Wanting to take a day to just be creative and put everything else on the back burner. Need to nurture the soul I guess you would say!
Planning our Thanksgiving meal. It is literally my all time favorite holiday because it is a day to be with family and enjoy really good, hearty food. The kind that can warm you to your toes and make even your belly smile. MMMM.
Craving hot soup, something spicy or just simply hot that will soothe my hateful throat and clear my sinuses.
Holding that thought. The thought that is there but not quite. The one that you so badly want to remember but can’t. Yup. That is the one. Holding it…or at least trying.

Thinking I need to invent a washing machine/dryer and dishwasher that will clean and put the goods away. I really love all the clean clothes and dishes but UGH to putting it all back in its place.
Grateful for parents that support me and help in every way they can when a girl just can’t take care of herself and her brood.
Anticipating more snow and PRAYING for warmer temps. 5 is just not going to cut it in November!

Baby no More

My littlest man turned one last week. How can that be? I have had to ask myself this many times and am still coming up short because I have no idea what I did with the last year.

 

 

 

How has he reached so many milestones so fast? How is it that he can wear some of his brother’s clothes (2+ years his senior) and yet still looks small to me? I am just not sure I am ready to categorize him as a toddler although I realize he is no longer an infant.

 

Eli is my baby (my LAST baby might I add) and I am finding all the little things just that much sweeter for the simple reason that I know this is the LAST time we will go through teething. The LAST time we will wean a child off of their bottle. The LAST time we will potty train. This list could go on but I think you catch my drift. These were the things I completely dreaded with my first two. They terrified me because not only did I not feel like I had a clue on how to approach these issues but I didn’t know how I would react to the failure that often comes along with it and is all part of the learning process.

 

Being a parent is not an easy gig in any respect. We set these incredibly high standards for ourselves, our children and really for society and how our children will be accepted into it. Did we ever stop for a moment and think that maybe, just maybe, much of this will be out of our control?

 

The answer is “not likely” that we had this thought. Most of us went into parenting with some pretty clear ideas on what it was going to be like and how our children would behave.

 

Well guess what? We were all pretty full of ourselves to think that we could control every little detail of our little beings upbringing. They are people after all and they learn to have an opinion, manipulate us and work the system pretty early on. So brace yourself newbies. Parenting is messy and that is OKAY!

 

Messy can even be great or at least cute.

This is a picture of my middle child and youngest sharing a moment. That part is pretty darn cute but note the smeared windows and snot running down my youngest’s face. Now that is something beautiful because it is a constant reminder that messy can be pretty cute. You better bet that the window he has his chubby little mitts on pretty much always looks like that.

Since I am on a roll here I must share a recent paper towel incident that I could not resist capturing on film. I would have never done this with my first two. I would have been too worried about the mess and too frustrated to really understand what these little moments are really all about.

See?! What did I tell you? Having kids is messy but wishing away all the things happening in the moment so you can get to the “next best thing” is much messier. A lot more risk involved. You will end up feeling sad and that you deprived yourself of the kind of enjoyment you could have been experiencing all along.

I guess to sum it all up, your baby will someday no longer be “your baby”. My wish for you is that you realize just how precious this is and get down and messy with the best of the paper eaters you might have. Those paper eating moments will soon pass you by and all you will have left are the faint memories of how much of a mess that was to clean up. OR if you took a moment and captured that memory in a photo you might just see there is a whole lot more there.
