Enjoying a proper wine Skype date with good friends.

Feeling annoyed that said Skype date has been technologically challenged for the past hour.
Planning party after party this weekend so be prepared for crickets next week because I will be recovering!
Craving a warm day at the beach or a picnic in the park. Grass will be green soon but not soon enough.
Holding onto my wine glass…I think I better put it down now…

Thinking there are some fabulous blog ideas out there! How about this: online date with a secret profile than blog about all the nuances.
Grateful for family to remind me that life will be okay and friends to keep me laughing.

Wishing I could schedule a spa day right now but would settle for a simple hour to paint my nails without creating “texture” too.
Reading nothing but definitely ready to start a good book. Do I go towards something serious or something totally fantasy? Any suggestions?

So here is a little update for you. LONG overdue, sadly.

Below is the Laundry Soap I previously made.

As you can see below it sort of looks like wet toilet paper floating in water.

I would say that it smells GREAT but has a very loose consistency.

It is very possible that I over did it on the water.

I plan to make another batch in the future using a the original ingredients to compare the results.

I might have laundry soap for the next decade but it will be a useful experiment!

 

So far I have found this laundry soap to be effective and have not had any issues with my machine rejecting it (that was really my only fear).

What I love most is how cheap it is. Since you only use a cup each of the washing soda and Borax and one bar or Fels Naptha (this is no more than$2 in fact I think it is $.99 at our local grocery sore!) the cost is a FRACTION of what it is to go out and purchase laundry soap (name brand OR generic).

Next on the to-do list is to plan an epic party for my middle child.
He turns 4 on April Fool’s Day and I feel that he needs a proper celebration so we are planning a “fish” themed party.

I am toying with the idea of a “One Fish, Two Fish” theme but we will see.

New Frontiers

The past few weeks have been a bit of a blur and I have to admit I have been less than productive in most ways but thankfully I did manage to try a couple of new things!

 

I have been dabbling in homemade anything and everything. I have tried fabric softener, dishwasher detergent and soon to make laundry soap. So far I have had amazing luck and the savings is incredible!

 

Homemade Fabric Softener:
6 cups water
3 cups white vinegar
2 cups Suave Rosemary Mint Conditioner

Directions:
1. Mix water, vinegar, and hair conditioner in a 1 gallon container; stir. Do not shake it; it will cause foaming.
2. Use the same amount you normally use in a rinse cycle or spritz it on a wash cloth and throw in dryer.

**I found it to be helpful to use very hot water so that the conditioner broke down better than I finished it with my whisk for one final mix. I didn’t produce any foaming so I was pleased with the method and highly recommend it.

 

Dishwasher Detergent

Here was the original recipe:

  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups Washing Soda
  • 1 Cup Kosher salt
  • 10 packages unsweetened lemonade (citric acid)
  • A container to store it in
**Use Lemi Rinse, Vinegar or citric acid for a rinse aid

 

I adjusted this slightly with great success! I omitted the unsweetened lemonade or citric acid (didn’t want to turn my dishwasher colors) and it was really intended to replace a rinse aid. I do have some Jetdry that I am still using (why waste a bottle already purchased) but also picked up a bottle of Lemi Rinse to use once I run out of that. I have also read to use straight vinegar in the rinse aid dispenser so that will be the last resort. It would certainly be the cheapest option! Keep in mind that we have soft water but do have a private well so I am always worried about spots and that is why I continue to use a little rinse aid of some kind. You may not need it at all.

 

My next frontier will be the homemade laundry soap and I have to admit, as dorky as it seems, I am pretty stinking excited about it! I am thrilled to save but even more to have something that smells fresh and not perfumed like most detergent.

 

The recipe I am trying is another one from One Good Thing:

 

Check out her very helpful and creative blog for step by step instructions, tips and other great recipes and ideas! As you can see below I will be using a lovely bar of Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castille Soap in Lavendar instead of the Fels Naptha that the recipe calls for. I purchased mine at our local Walgreen’s but in a bigger city you could likely find this at your grocery store. The storage I have chosen will be the large pail for long-term storage and while in use I plan to store the laundry soap in a reused laundry soap container. Reduce, reuse right?!

Since I have not actually made the laundry soap yet I will show you the supplies I will be working with to inspire you!
